In the heart of the community, there are unsung heroes who dedicate their time, energy, and love to the care of others. We were fortunate enough to present the Volunteer of the Year award at the recent Hampshire Care Awards. This award is a testament to the selfless individuals who have dedicated their time and expertise to improve the lives of care home residents and people receiving care in the community.

While we can't disclose their names for obvious reasons, we were bowled over by the stories of the Hampshire volunteers which we feel are too remarkable not to share:

The nominations began with last year's winner, who continues to set an exceptional example. Despite battling a brain tumour, he tirelessly runs errands for the residents, assists with hospital visits, and even manages the care home's social media. His recent brain surgery hasn't slowed him down; he's already preparing to represent the care home at UK Care Week.

Nominee 2 is a dedicated volunteer whose commitment extends beyond her family ties to the home. She generously offers her time to engage residents in various activities, from music trivia to exercise classes. Her gentle approach and commitment to inclusion have brought joy and laughter to many residents.

An avid gardener, nominee 3, is a volunteer with 35 years of service who has transformed the care home's garden into a haven for residents. Her gardening club is a favourite among residents, and her dedication to creating a beautiful outdoor space is commendable.

Nominee 4 is a companion who offers more than just companionship to the residents; he is a friend. His contributions are invaluable, from taking residents for walks to preparing new resident folders. His willingness to help with events and his attention to detail, even ironing tablecloths for a charity quiz night, make him a cherished community member.

Then we have nominee 5, a helper whose humility is as impressive as his dedication. He supports staff and residents in countless ways, from running errands to spending quality time with residents. His generous donation of laptops and iPads during the pandemic kept residents connected with their loved ones.

Nominee 6, known for his kindness and helpfulness, was nominated by one of the residents. His efforts to take wheelchair-bound residents out to enjoy the garden are deeply appreciated.

At 86, nominee 7's dedication is awe-inspiring. He willingly takes on any task and spends quality time with residents, making him a beloved figure in the home.

Nominee 8's hardworking efforts are greatly appreciated. Whether assisting staff or playing a game of dominoes with residents, his presence is integral to the wellbeing of residents.

Nominee 9's selflessness shone during the pandemic when he moved into the home to care for his wife. His willingness to help with everything from paperwork to pharmacy runs makes him a true hero.

Nominee 10 has dedicated the last four years to improving residents' lives. Despite losing his wife to COVID-19, he continues to support the home, providing virtual communication for residents and relatives and bringing joy to everyone he interacts with.

Lastly, we have nominee 11, a compassionate nurse who returned as a volunteer to spend more time engaging with residents after 20 years of nursing at the home. Her nursing expertise, compassion, and positive energy have significantly impacted the residents' lives.

Each of these nominees embodies the spirit of selflessness and dedication that the Volunteer of the Year Award celebrates. Their stories remind us of the profound impact that volunteers have on the lives of care home residents and people receiving care in the community. We wanted to highlight and shine a light on all of the nominees as each one of them is truly extraordinary, making a significant and meaningful difference in the lives of those they so selflessly assist.
